Paws in memory of animal war victims on Remembrance Day
Mayhew International are asking for people to take an extra moment on Remembrance Sunday to spare a thought for the animal victims of war.
The charity, which works in many countries around the globe, wants to highlight the suffering of abandoned dogs in war torn provinces in Afghanistan. The charity works with ex-Royal Marine, Penny Farthing, who is now renowned for his rescue story after bringing back several dogs from Helmand Province, where he was stationed in 2006.
In February 2009, Mayhew International assisted Pen Farthing is finding a new home for an Afghan dog of war, Bear, who had his ears and tail hacked off in preparation for dog-fighting – a popular sport in the country. Re-homed through The Mayhew Animal Home, Bear is now living in a happy family home, but his shorn ears and tail remain a constant reminder of the perils these innocent animals face.
Mayhew International CEO, Caroline Yates, said: “We hope the public will spare a thought this Sunday for the animals suffering in war torn countries across the globe. Our work in Afghanistan has exposed us to the reality of the silent suffering of these dogs, like Bear, as well as other animals. The British public are proud of their animal-loving status and now is the time to share that compassion for the innocent animal victims living in conflict zones.”
Mayhew International has worked in Afghanistan for several years, both the Kabul University Veterinary Faculty and Kabul Zoo to highlight the plight of companion animals in the area.
Ex Royal Marine, Pen Farthing, said: British soldiers are continuing to give the ultimate sacrifice so that ordinary Afghan civilians have a chance at a life that we take for granted. It is also fitting that we remember that it is not just the people who suffer through war and conflict. By promoting animal welfare and education then we have a chance to improve both the lives of the local people and the animals that are at times just forgotten in the fog of war’.
