Urgent foster/permanent home wanted for abused Yorkshire Terrier! This tiny little girl (3 kg), 8 years old, was badly abused and beaten by her owner who subsequently dropped her off at an animal shelter that cooperates with the Movet veterinary clinic. He said tha...t he did not need the dog anymore. The dog was in such bad shape that the shelter could only offer to euthanise her, but one person with a very good heart took her to the charity's vet. The dog also has multiple hematomas that need to heal before she can be sterilised. Right now, we are looking for a quiet and loving home (temporary or permanent) in Moscow for this poor girl so that she can recover from her ordeals and where she can learn that not all humans are bad! If you would like to help, please write to moscowanimals@gmail.com.

5th January 2010 - Occasional hysterical reporting of a controllable situation results in an hysterical response. It is important that the authorities take a measured approach by vaccinating the stray animals in that area of Moscow and do not 'remove' the animals due a potential risk of rabies. Reporting such as this with an inappropriate photo only goes to further instill unnecessary concern. Read about the story here

1st December 2009 - The Mayhew Animal Home and Humane Education Centre has received the prestigious Marchig Animal Welfare award and $20,000 to fund and promote the charity’s pioneering neutering ethos and educational community programmes. A portion of the funds will also go to further develop Mayhew International’s overseas projects, setting up sterilisation initiatives and working for best practice and animal welfare standards for companion animals. Patron of the award, Lady Marchig, has been a keen supporter of The Mayhew, in Kensal Green, for many years and backs the charity’s mission: to stem the current global stray animal crisis, more neutering and public awareness programmes need to be set up to prevent rising numbers of unwanted litters being born daily.
Lady Marchig has also given generously to help build The Mayhew’s Community Veterinary Clinic in 2007, supported our stray & feral cat neutering project and has funded one of the Home’s Animal Ambulances, used by the charity’s four Animal Welfare Officers in the community work and rescue of abandoned or abused animals.
Mayhew CEO, Caroline Yates, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to receive this generous award. The Mayhew works tirelessly to pioneer new community programmes and drive home the message of responsible pet ownership; of which neutering is key. Additionally, at a tough time financially, all charities are feeling the pinch and this support means we can continue with our essential animal welfare work and educational initiatives.”
We are very grateful for this award and thank Lady Marchig and the Marchig Animal Welfare Trust for their support.

Paws in memory of animal war victims on Remembrance Day
Mayhew International are asking for people to take an extra moment on Remembrance Sunday to spare a thought for the animal victims of war.
The charity, which works in many countries around the globe, wants to highlight the suffering of abandoned dogs in war torn provinces in Afghanistan. The charity works with ex-Royal Marine, Penny Farthing, who is now renowned for his rescue story after bringing back several dogs from Helmand Province, where he was stationed in 2006.
In February 2009, Mayhew International assisted Pen Farthing is finding a new home for an Afghan dog of war, Bear, who had his ears and tail hacked off in preparation for dog-fighting – a popular sport in the country. Re-homed through The Mayhew Animal Home, Bear is now living in a happy family home, but his shorn ears and tail remain a constant reminder of the perils these innocent animals face.
Mayhew International CEO, Caroline Yates, said: “We hope the public will spare a thought this Sunday for the animals suffering in war torn countries across the globe. Our work in Afghanistan has exposed us to the reality of the silent suffering of these dogs, like Bear, as well as other animals. The British public are proud of their animal-loving status and now is the time to share that compassion for the innocent animal victims living in conflict zones.”
Mayhew International has worked in Afghanistan for several years, both the Kabul University Veterinary Faculty and Kabul Zoo to highlight the plight of companion animals in the area.
Ex Royal Marine, Pen Farthing, said: British soldiers are continuing to give the ultimate sacrifice so that ordinary Afghan civilians have a chance at a life that we take for granted. It is also fitting that we remember that it is not just the people who suffer through war and conflict. By promoting animal welfare and education then we have a chance to improve both the lives of the local people and the animals that are at times just forgotten in the fog of war’.
13th July 2009 - Chris Sainsbury, International Projects Officer, completed the Asics London 10K run in 35.13, which is a fantastic time so congratulations to him! If you wish to posthumously sponsor him for his run please visit http://www.justgiving.com/chrissainsbury
